How to change a 20L water jar on a dispenser without spilling (or hurting your back)

Short answer

Wash your hands, check the new jar’s seal, then remove the cap label and seal. Lift the jar with your legs, not your back, holding it by the handle and base. Turn it over quickly and seat the neck straight onto the dispenser’s probe. Wipe any drips and check that the taps run. With a pump, simply push the pump tube into the open neck.

Before you start

  • Wash and dry your hands.
  • Check the new jar: unbroken seal, clear water, no cracks.
  • Make sure the old jar is completely empty, then lift it off.
  • If the dispenser has not been cleaned for a few weeks, clean it now.

Steps

  1. Stand the new jar upright next to the dispenser.
  2. Peel off the cap label and pull off the seal. Do not touch the cap opening or the neck.
  3. Bend your knees, grip the handle with one hand and the base with the other, and lift with your legs.
  4. Bring the jar up to chest height with the neck facing up.
  5. Turn it over in one quick, controlled movement and lower the neck straight onto the dispenser probe.
  6. Let it settle — you will hear air bubbles as water fills the reservoir.
  7. Wipe up any drips and test both taps.

Using a pump instead

Remove the seal, push the pump tube into the neck until the collar sits firmly, and press the pump (or the button on an electric pump) until water flows. No lifting needed.

If it leaks

  • Leak at the neck: the jar is not seated straight. Lift it slightly and reseat it.
  • Water overflows from the reservoir: the cap may be damaged. Replace the jar.
  • Drip from a tap: the tap washer may be worn; check with your dispenser supplier.

If lifting a 19 kg jar is difficult, use a hand-press or rechargeable pump instead.

Frequently asked questions

How do I put a water jar on a dispenser without spilling?

Remove the seal, lift the jar to chest height with the neck up, then turn it over quickly and seat the neck straight onto the probe in one movement.

Why is my water dispenser leaking after changing the jar?

Usually the jar is not seated straight on the probe, or the cap is damaged. Reseat the jar; if it still leaks, replace the jar.

Is there an easier way than lifting the jar?

Yes — a manual hand-press pump or a rechargeable electric pump works directly on the jar without lifting it.
