Which water dispenser should you buy for a 20L jar? Manual pump vs electric pump vs dispenser

By the Refillr team, KottayamUpdated 5 min read
Short answer

For most homes, a gravity dispenser (a stand or table-top unit with taps) is the easiest way to use a 20L jar. A manual hand-press pump costs the least and needs no power, a rechargeable electric pump saves effort without lifting the jar, and a hot-and-cold electric dispenser suits offices or homes that want chilled and hot water on tap.

The four options

TypeHow it worksBest forWatch out for
Manual hand-press pumpSits on the jar neck; press to pump water outSmall homes, occasional use, no powerTakes effort; jar stays on the floor
Rechargeable electric pumpBattery pump on the jar neck; press a buttonHomes that want effort-free pouring without liftingNeeds charging every so often
Gravity dispenserJar sits upside down on a stand; water flows to a tapMost homes and small officesYou lift the jar onto it each time
Hot & cold electric dispenserTop- or bottom-loading machine that heats and coolsOffices, clinics, larger familiesNeeds power and regular cleaning

What to check before you buy

  • Neck fit: the dispenser or pump must fit a standard 20L jar neck snugly.
  • Food-grade parts: the reservoir, tubes and taps should be food-grade material.
  • Easy to clean: you should be able to reach the reservoir and taps to wash them.
  • Stability: a gravity stand must not wobble with a full 19 kg jar on it.
  • Space: allow room to lift the jar if it is a top-loading model.

Lifting a 19 kg jar

A full jar weighs about 19–20 kg. If lifting it onto a stand is difficult for anyone in your home, choose a pump or a bottom-loading dispenser instead. Refillr jars have a built-in handle, which makes carrying and placing them easier.

Frequently asked questions

Which is better: a water pump or a dispenser?

A pump is cheaper and needs no lifting; a gravity dispenser is easier for everyday use and keeps the jar off the floor. Choose based on who will change the jar and how much water you use.

Do I need electricity for a water dispenser?

Not for a gravity dispenser or a manual hand-press pump. Only hot-and-cold dispensers and electric pumps (usually rechargeable) need power.

How much does a full 20L water jar weigh?

About 19–20 kg with the water, which is why pumps and bottom-loading dispensers are popular in homes with older family members.
