Drinking water for hostels and PGs in Kottayam: how many jars and how to set it up
Plan on about 2–3 litres of drinking water per resident per day. A 20-resident hostel therefore uses roughly 2–3 jars a day, or around 60–90 jars a month. Place one dispenser per floor or common area, keep a day’s jars in reserve, and set fixed delivery days so the supply never depends on someone remembering to call.
Estimate your monthly jars
| Residents | Jars per day | Jars per month (approx.) |
|---|---|---|
| 10 | 1–2 | 30–45 |
| 20 | 2–3 | 60–90 |
| 40 | 4–6 | 125–190 |
| 60 | 6–9 | 190–285 |
If the kitchen also uses jar water for cooking, add that separately. Use is higher in March–May.
Setting it up
- One dispenser per floor or common room, so nobody carries jars upstairs.
- A spare full jar beside each dispenser.
- A shaded store for spare jars, away from the kitchen stove and windows.
- One person responsible for counting empties before the delivery day.
Why fixed days work for hostels
Fixed delivery days mean the same number of jars arrive on the same days each week. Residents are not left waiting for someone to call a supplier, and the warden knows exactly what is coming.
