Drinking water for apartments and residents’ associations in Kottayam: a supply guide for RWAs

By the Refillr team, KottayamUpdated 6 min read
Short answer

Apartments in Kottayam usually organise drinking water in one of two ways: each flat orders its own 19-litre jars, or the association arranges one supplier for the whole building. Individual ordering is simplest and needs no committee money. A common arrangement helps when many flats want the same supplier, delivery slot and billing. Whichever you choose, agree lift access, delivery hours and who is billed before the first delivery.

Most apartment committees in Kottayam get the same request every few months: “can we get a proper water supplier for the whole building?” The honest answer is that there are two sensible models, and the right one depends on how many flats actually want packaged water and how the association prefers to handle money.

Model 1: every flat orders for itself

Each household chooses a supplier, holds its own jars and pays for its own refills. The association only has to make sure the delivery person can reach the flat. This is the lowest-effort model and works well when households have different habits, such as a family of five and a single working professional in the same building.

Model 2: one supplier recommended by the association

The committee shortlists a supplier and tells residents. Everyone still orders and pays individually, but the building gets one delivery pattern, one set of contact numbers and fewer unknown vehicles at the gate. This is the model most RWAs end up with, because it needs no pooled money and no accounting.

Model 3: a common account for the building

The association orders a set number of jars for a common area such as a gym, clubhouse, security cabin or office, and pays one invoice. Common supply is useful for shared spaces, but it is rarely sensible for flats, because consumption varies so much between households.

What to settle before the first delivery

  • Delivery hours — agree a window that suits residents and security, and avoid quiet afternoon and night hours.
  • Lift access — can jars use the service lift, and at what times? Carrying jars up stairs slows deliveries and should be known in advance.
  • Who the delivery person asks for at the gate, and whether security keeps a list of expected deliveries.
  • Empty jar storage — where do empties sit until collection so they do not block corridors?
  • Jar deposits — each flat pays its own, so make sure residents know it is refundable and written on the receipt.

Choosing the supplier

Do not choose on price alone. Ask the supplier where the water is filled, how jars are cleaned, how deliveries are tracked and what happens when a delivery is missed. Our guide on choosing a supplier has a full checklist.

How prepaid bundles help apartments

Because most flats use a steady number of jars a month, a prepaid bundle usually costs less per jar than single orders. On Refillr, a 30-refill Home Plan is ₹65 per jar against ₹75 for a single order. Families who also have an office can use one bundle at two addresses.

Frequently asked questions

Should an apartment association buy water for all flats?

Usually not. Water use differs widely between households, so most associations recommend one supplier and let each flat order and pay for itself. A common account makes sense for shared spaces like a clubhouse or security cabin.

How many jars does a flat in Kottayam typically use?

A family of four typically needs about 18–20 jars a month for drinking, or 24–26 if they also cook with jar water. Our jar-count guide shows how to estimate your own number.

Who pays the jar deposit in an apartment?

Each flat pays its own refundable deposit for the jars it holds. The deposit is returned when the jars are handed back in good condition.

Can delivery be limited to certain hours?

Yes. Agree a delivery window with your supplier before the first delivery and share it with security so the delivery person is let in without delay.

What if lifts cannot be used for jars?

Tell the supplier early. Delivery on upper floors by stairs takes longer, so it should be known when the delivery slot is planned.
